"Sapphire Honu" Fine Art Gallery Print
Mala Pier on the island if Maui is one of my favorite dive sites. The pier collapsed during a Hurricane which provided hard substrate for the reef to grow and reclaim the pier. It now is home to dozens of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, White Tip Reef Sharks, Frogfish, and an occasional Spotted Eagle Ray or Manta Ray. On a clear day it is one of my favorite spots to photograph. This particular sunny day, a beautiful green sea turtle (Honu, in Hawaiian) swam beneath me. The reflection of the light on her shell made the background look so much darker than it really was. After reviewing the photo and deeply appreciating the bright contrast between the turtle and its background, the “Sapphire Honu” was created.
